GameCube Pick-Ups and The Sega Trio

Alright, first time posting on my own blog in a while, I would like to catch y’all up on some of my lucky finds while on the quest to video game bliss. I have begun to try and learn how to do repairs on retro systems so that I can possibly start to buy many of them wholesale to repair and make my gaming a little more self sufficient. I’m sitting right now with the Sega deadly trio Genesis, Saturn, & Dreamcast. No Master System for the time being but maybe one day. I successfully pulled off my first repair by re-soldering the power jack on my Genesis. It was definitely not pretty but it actually stays on without turning off all the time now, and that was the main goal. The Dreamcast was in great working condition when I got it but was only 15$ for the console alone so I had to get it when I saw it. The Saturn powers on but does not have any audio/video, this could be a number of things but for starters I am going to replace the watch battery that it has. I was blown away when I heard from MetalJesusRocks that the Saturn will delete all of your saved games if they are not moved to a save cartridge when this battery goes out (Yearly!!). It seems like a really cool console with some great games though and I look forward to the challenge of figuring out how to get it in working condition (any suggestions of what to check would be greatly appreciated). I found the Saturn locally for 30$ with all cables and a controller.

I almost forgot to mention that I got a copy of Shining in the Darkness from Lukie Games as well for the Genesis but sadly for now these may all be getting sold until I can get enough of them moving to keep some to hang onto. I want to have a nice collection, but I am also hoping to use the buying and selling as a means to keep my hobby self supporting and hopefully growing as well.

Sega was a cool brand for me to be able to play around with because I never had a Sega system growing up. I was only able to play them in passing at friend’s or family’s houses. I always enjoyed them and would like to work on a collection of them as I am able to. One great thing about Sega is there is no 30 steps to opening like an Xbox 360, you got a Phillips screwdriver? You can open it right up. It seems like the same goes for their cords and other things like that. I was able to find both AV and power cables around my house that worked perfectly for the Dreamcast. It may not be as much of a business friendly model, but that is extremely user friendly and I applaud Sega for their bold stance as far as that was concerned.

Onto the games! I found a great deal on Offer Up for some GameCube games that I have been dying to have. The list reads Zelda: Twilight Princess, Zelda: Windwaker (the only one I have already played but is an absolute favorite), Zelda: Four Swords Adventure, Eternal (MF’n!) Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Metroid Prime, and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. All for the amazing price of 40$ I was super stoked to find such a great deal for so many games off my wishlist. I’m very excited to play all of them, Four Swords should be a fun one to play with my wife, and I am very much looking forward to my first run through with Twilight Princess. If I can go on a small tangent I would also like to mention that I have been seriously loving Skies of Arcadia, it is such an amazing JRPG and I have been playing the crap out of it lately. Back to the games I just got though. I have wanted to play Eternal Darkness since I had a GameCube as a kid, but especially ever since I have been digging into the work of H.P Lovecraft, it is supposed to be one of the best Lovecraftian games and I honestly never knew if I would find it at an affordable price. I’m not usually one for FPS games. There are just a number of reasons the genre fell out of favor with me. Mostly just because I prefer a nice story driven game with adventure aspects though. I feel like the Metroid Prime’s will definitely transcend that gap of interest for me though.

Anyways I didn’t have too much to say this time just wanted to do a little check in. Game-wise I look forward to reviewing Overcooked and Skies of Arcadia when I have the time to finish the two. Any recommendations of games for any of the systems I spoke about would be spectacular, thanks for reading!

    1. That is awesome, I didn’t know they made a version like that! I have the one that comes with Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and LOZ 1 & 2. Can’t wait to play 1 & 2 & re play the others, there is just so little time though! Makes me miss the summer vacations of school years 😆

  1. These are all awesome games! I love the price you paid as well… what a deal!

I’m glad to hear you’re on a mission to tinker with and repair consoles. I don’t know much about electronics myself, but my better half has been learning a ton about console repair by trial and error over the past year or two. I hope you have some luck with it!

  2. Nice finds! I’ve always wanted to play Eternal Darkness. I also didn’t know the Sega Saturn erases your games if they aren’t moved to a save cartridge, ouch! I have a Genesis and a Dreamcast that I haven’t played in forever, but after seeing this post I feel like playing them! 🙂

    1. I know I was so excited when I saw it at an affordable price! I never thought I would get the chance to play it. There are a ton of great games for the Dreamcast and Saturn, can’t wait to play some when I come across them. As with all older consoles some of the awesome looking games are extremely pricey though, so I hope to have as much luck with those systems as well.

      1. That is awesome! I saw it for around $8 at Blockbuster many years ago and never bought it, which is something I still regret! It’s a shame that some of the older games are so pricey. Good luck finding all the ones you want! 🙂

  3. Sweet finds and great job repairing things! I’ve been meaning to expand my Sega collection. I only have a Genesis with 2 games at the moment.

I played a bit of Eternal Darkness and enjoyed the creepy experience. The Metroid Prime games are also my favourites. I hope you enjoy them 🙂

    1. Thanks so much! I can’t wait to get some time to play them working crazy hours for now so barely any gaming time 😫😄. There are so many games I want for the Genesis but the ones I want are so expensive, I am hoping to find some of them at garage sales or thrift shops in the future.

  4. Sick pickups! All those GameCube games you mentioned I just happen to have beaten in the past year or so. Eternal Darkness being the exception – I need to look into it!

My gripe with GameCube is the prices. Seems like you got some good deals though, $40 for what you listed is a terrific price.

    1. Yeah the prices are ridiculous right now, I don’t think I would have been able to pick any of these up any other way. Was very lucky to check offer up that day XD

    1. Can’t wait to get some games for my Sega consoles! I only have Shining in the Darkness so far, it seemed pretty fun when I booted up to test it though.

    1. Can’t wait to pick up games for them and a controller for the Dreamcast. Still have to figure out what’s wrong with the AV on the Saturn. Excited to catch up on a bunch of games I missed out on 😄
